Unitarian Universalists have many ways of articulating our seven Principles in simpler language. The children in our Spirit Play class refer to the principles as Promises that the members of the community make to each other, and each promise is related one of the seven colors of the rainbow:

  1. Our red promise is to: respect all people.
  2. Our orange promise is to: offer fair and kind treatment to everyone.
  3. Our yellow promise is to: yearn to accept and learn about ourselves, others, and the Mystery.
  4. Our green promise is to grow by exploring what is right and true in life.
  5. Our blue promise is to believe in our ideas and act on them.
  6. Our indigo or dark blue promise is to insist on a peaceful, fair and free world.
  7. Our violet or purple promise is to value our home earth that we share.

Here’s the way our Chalice Children describe them:

  1. We believe that each and every person is important.
  2. We believe that all people should be treated fairly and kindly.
  3. We believe that we should accept one another and keep on learning together.
  4. We believe that each person must be free to search for what is true and right in life.
  5. We believe that all persons should have a vote about the things that concern them.
  6. We believe in working for a peaceful, fair, and free world.
  7. We believe in caring for our planet Earth, the home we share with all living things.
