Tu B’Shvat Service – February 5th, 2023

For this Service, Nancy Gould will lead a Tu B’shvat seder in the Fellowship Hall at the Church of the Ascension to celebrate the Jewish “birthday of the trees!” The members of UUFSM will enjoy this earth-based tradition in person for a socially-distanced ritual “meal” (snack), or if you would prefer to participate from home via zoom, please have ready some red and some white wine or grape juice, two glasses (for the wine/juice), and a few pieces of fruit from the following list – one or more from each world as described below. The observance explores the seasons of the spirit, connecting us to the wonderful world in which we live. This event is appropriate for the entire family. Together, we will create a meaningful experience of coming out of the darkness of winter into the spring, with all its hope. Please join in the joy of moving into the light and let your own sap rise!

• The first world: Fruits that contain an inedible outer shell and an edible inner core, for example: orange, banana, walnut, coconut.

• The second world: Fruits that contain an edible outer flesh and a pithy, inedible core, for example: cherry, peach, olive, date.

• The third world: Fruits that may be eaten entirely, for example: blueberries, strawberries.

• The fourth world: The wine/juice is served with only spiritual sustenance.
